The African-American Historical & Cultural Museum of the San Joaquin Valley

Opened in June 1993, this museum hosts rotating and permanent displays concerning African-American history and culture. Interpretive displays describe the lives and times of leading San Joaquin Valley African-American literature.

In 1984, the African American Historical & Cultural Museum was established to provide a vehicle for African Americans that had made significant contributions to the richness of the San Joaquin Valley.

Our first floor gallery features 3 cultural exhibits per year, along with our gift shop that features African artifacts, greeting cards, sculptures, and African clothing. Our second floor gallery features the museum's permanent pictorial exhibit, which includes artifacts of our pilgrimage and a beautiful children's library. We also provide educational resources, which include video presentations and storytelling.

Our most popular tours are during January for Martin Luther King's birthday celebration and in February for Black History Month.

The Discovery Center is a non-profit science education facility that is fully self-funded. The Discovery Center is located in a six acre park. We have natural outdoor exhibits and play areas for kids of all ages to enjoy including a NASA space capsule, a dino dig, a pond with fish, crawdads and turtles, a maze, and a Miwok Indian Village. Admission to the park is free, and parking is free.

The Eastern Fresno County Historical Society is working to bring you a glimpse of what Auberry, Big Creek, Burrough Valley, Dinkey Creek, Dry Creek, Huntington, Shaver Lake, Tollhouse and Wishon was all about during the pioneer days. At the Tollhouse Museum, located on the Sierra High School campus, you will see artifacts, pictures, maps, books, machinery, clothing and much more.

The Fresno Art Museum offers a dynamic experience for appreciating art. The museum welcomes, inspires, and educates a diverse regional audience through significant exhibitions, thought-provoking programs, and meaningful interactions with artists and the creative process.

Overview

The Fresno Art Museum collects, preserves, and exhibits to the public tangible objects valuable to art and history. Exhibitions include a wide range of contemporary as well as modern works by local, national and international artists. With additional emphasis on Mexican art from pre-Columbian times to the present, and with the planned bequest of significant collections of pre-Columbian ceramics and French post-impressionist graphics, the Museum is working to serve as both an educational facility and a repository for important collections from the Central Valley.

As the only modern art museum between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the Fresno Art Museum is dedicated to serving the population of Central California.  Since its inception as a regional arts center in 1948, the Fresno Art Museum has grown into an important museum of contemporary and modern art. The Museum evolved from a group of local artists who formed the Fresno Art League in the late 1940s for the purpose of critiquing and exhibiting their artwork. The Fresno Art League joined forces with others interested in building a place to exhibit and study art, and the original building was constructed on Fresno City property at Radio Park. Originally called the Fresno Art Center and Museum, it changed to the Fresno Art Museum in the late 1980s.

The Fresno Metropolitan Museum is home to a permanent collection comprised of more than 3,000 works of art and artifacts drawn from several cultures spanning more than 400 years. Currently closed.

The Friends of the Fresno County Public Library was formed in 1980 by a group of concerned citizens to serve as a link between the Library and the community and to raise money for special projects.

In the 1990s, the Friends of the Library supported the passage of Measure B, a 1/8 cent sales tax for the purpose of Library operations. Since the passage of Measure B in 1998 and again in 2004, library usage has soared—circulation has doubled and participation in library programs for all ages has increased dramatically.

Sanger Depot Museum, where the rich history of Sanger, California comes to life from its boomtown beginnings to its growth into the city known as "the Nation's Christmas Tree City." Sanger is located about 10 miles east of Fresno in California's Central Valley and is right at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The Sanger Depot Museum is actually the Sanger Railroad Depot, once the hub of the town's growth.

Built in 1887 the Sanger Railroad Depot sat beside the Southern Pacific Railroad that ran between Fresno and Porterville, California. Among the cargo that passed through this depot was grain, citrus and lots of lumber brought down from the mountains by Sanger's booming lumber operation. When Sanger's commerce no longer needed the Depot, it was discovered that the building was the oldest in Sanger. At that time, Jack Tanney and his brother who had purchased the Depot donated it to the Sanger Historical Society. The Museum was opened in December 1977.

Simonian Farms - A Historic Valley Landmark

Nestled in the San Joaquin Valley South-East of Fresno, California, lies this unique farm where you can go back to the days of balloon tire bicycles and peddle cars. There is absolutely no charge to view this vast array of antiques.

While shopping inside our produce market, visitors encounter fascinating memorabilia such as old mannequins, porcelain signs, restored vintage gas pumps, antiques bicycles and even a turn-of-the-century model train that steams and whistles along 200 feet of overhead track.
